Donnie Darko (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) suffers from a mental illness. One night, he experiences a mysterious calling and sleepwalks, which leads him to narrowly escape a bizarre accident where a plane crashes into the ceiling of his room. From that moment on, his life changes; he begins to experience frequent hallucinations, including visions of a rabbit figure named Frank, who tells him that the world will end in 28 days, 6 hours, 48 minutes, and 12 seconds. He becomes intensely curious about time travel and alternate universes after receiving a book titled "The Philosophy of Time Travel."
