The story is based on the nonfiction work by Rebecca Skloot. The titular character, Henrietta Lacks, was an African American woman suffering from cancer in the 1950s. In 1951, medical researchers unlawfully obtained cancer cells from her, which led to shocking medical breakthroughs—changes that affected many lives and even transformed the entire medical field. It is said that Henrietta Lacks' cells were used to create the first "immortal" human cell line—which survived even a week after implantation. The protagonist of the drama is Deborah Lacks (played by Oprah Winfrey), Henrietta Lacks' daughter, who tries to understand a mother she never met and explores the peculiar connection between her and modern medical advancements. The plot profoundly reveals issues of arrogance, hubris, race, and poverty in the medical field, while deeply analyzing how "the least likely people" can establish "the deepest friendships." Rose Byrne portrays Rebecca Skloot, a young journalist investigating the story of Henrietta Lacks and her "immortal" cells. She forms an intimate friendship with Henrietta's daughter, the charismatic yet complex Deborah. After more than a decade of research, Rebecca ultimately wrote the famous book "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks." Upon publication, the book immediately made the New York Times Best Sellers list and stayed on it for a full four years, having a profound impact. (cr Tianya Xiaozhu)
