Kate (Hilary Swank) is a classical pianist, but relying on her hands for a living, she suffers from the incurable amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, leaving her unable to care for herself. Kate's husband (Josh Duhamel) is busy with work and has no time to take care of his wife, so he decides to hire a caregiver for her. College student Becca (Emmy Rossum) comes to apply for the job. Becca's punk style leaves Kate's husband unimpressed, but Kate selects her. Becca, being a mischievous child at heart, has no idea how to take care of someone. Despite her poor performance, Kate still recognizes and affirms Becca. Becca realizes that Kate is not truly happy, so she decides to break free from all constraints and live the life that Kate really wants to lead. After a wild experience, Kate regains her passion for life and finds new hope for the future.
