Rachel (Emily Blunt) has a serious alcohol dependency, which leads her husband Tom (Justin Theroux) to leave her and marry a woman named Anna (Rebecca Ferguson). Not long after, they have a child, which plunges the infertile Rachel into deep pain. Every day, Rachel takes the train into the city, and she becomes fascinated by the beautiful woman Megan (Haley Bennett) whose image flickers by the train window. The young and beautiful Megan lives in a comfortable mansion with her handsome husband Scott (Luke Evans), and the two are in love, possessing everything Rachel desires but cannot have. However, one day, Rachel is shocked to discover that Megan is having an affair with a stranger, and shortly thereafter, news of Megan's disappearance appears in the newspaper.
