As the captain of the fire department, Michael (John Travolta) is undoubtedly the spiritual leader in the eyes of his team. Under his leadership, the team has successfully completed fire emergency tasks time and time again. Michael has many excellent "apprentices," among whom Jack (Joaquin Phoenix) makes him the proudest. For Michael, the upright and brave Jack is exactly the successor he hopes to find. However, Jack also has his own troubles; the busy and dangerous job has led to issues in his relationship with his wife. Meanwhile, the unexpected sacrifice of a colleague and friend has caused Jack to contemplate whether he should change jobs. Just at this critical moment, another major fire breaks out. This time, however, Jack is not the rescuer but rather a trapped person waiting to be saved. Faced with the terrifying and surging flames, and watching his fellow firefighters bravely combat the blaze, Jack finds the meaning of life.
