In London in 1952, William, a civil servant for many years, has become a cog in the bureaucratic machine of post-war Britain's reconstruction, with endless paperwork piling up on his desk. At this moment, the exhausted man learns that he is terminally ill, and he begins to seek some meaning in his dull, colorless life before he dies. He tries hedonism, ignoring his family and work, and then William finds himself attracted to his young female colleague, Margaret, who seems to embody life and vitality, representing what has passed in William's life. Their friendship gradually deepens, and she inadvertently shows him how to face the inevitability of death, how to accumulate life experiences, and to devote one last wholehearted effort to overcoming all difficulties in order to push forward a long-delayed project that helps children in impoverished areas of London.
