In the capital city hangs a white rainbow, and various incidents unfold, leaving people troubled by a sense of unease. At that time, Emperor Suzaku was pained by the turmoil in people's hearts, and the astronomer Kamo Motoharu ordered the interpretation of a secret Chinese text, "The Golden Crow and the Jade Rabbit Collection," to ascertain the cause of the events. Motoharu had two esteemed disciples, Abe no Motonari and Ashiya Doman; however, he believed that his diligent disciple Motonari would be the one to inherit the Kamo clan in front of his adopted daughter Sakaki. Meanwhile, Doman, who learned of this matter in Motoharu's inner chamber, secretly had his retainer Akushiramon assassinate Motoharu’s interpreter, intending to steal the secret text from Motoharu on his way to the imperial palace. Doman also shifted the blame onto Motonari and Sakaki. The acquitted Sakaki, in her immense grief, committed suicide, and Motonari, driven mad by the loss of his beloved Sakaki, broke into the inner chamber to reclaim the secret text and embarked on a journey of wandering in search of Sakaki’s presence.
A few days later, Motonari arrived at Sakaki's hometown, Shinmura, where he encountered Sakaki's identical younger sister, Kazuha. Under the care of Kazuha, who resembled Sakaki, Motonari felt happiness amidst his madness; however, Kazuha also harbored feelings for him. Yet, this happiness was short-lived.
While hunting the white fox, Akushiramon discovered Motonari. Out of anger over the released white fox, a brawl ensued, resulting in Kazuha being taken away. The one who rescued the injured Motonari was the white fox he had saved. The white fox transformed its daughter into Kazuha and cared for Motonari deep within the Izumi forest. Kazuha, enchanted by Motonari, quietly formed a bond with the fox incarnation. At that time, escaping from Akushiramon, Kazuha inquired about Motonari in the Izumi forest. When Kazuha, meeting the rejuvenated Motonari, cried wildly on his chest, he was utterly surprised. Observing the two, the fox Kazuha left a poem beside her quietly sleeping child after realizing their love had ended and vanished.
Upon learning everything, Motonari sorrowfully called out for fox Kazuha. Doman and Akushiramon’s group rushed to take the secret text from Motonari, but were attacked by Motonari's fox incarnation. Just then, news arrived confirming Motonari's safety, as a messenger rushed in from the capital. Although the joyful Kazuha suggested that Motonari return to the capital, he resolved to stay in the forest and bid farewell to Kazuha.
