This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by American novelist Thomas Cobb. Bad Blake (played by Jeff Bridges) is a washed-up, alcoholic country blues singer who meets Jean (played by Maggie Gyllenhaal), a reporter for the Santa Fe Journal, while performing in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Near bankruptcy, Bad heads to Phoenix to open for his former student, rising country star Tommy Sweet (played by Colin Farrell). After the concert, Bad is in a car accident on the way from Phoenix to Santa Fe and recovers at Jean's house, where feelings begin to develop between them. Bad starts writing songs again and confides in his longtime friend Wayne (played by Robert Duvall), and everything seems to be heading in a positive direction. However, during a visit from Jean and her four-year-old son to Houston, an unexpected event makes Bad truly realize where his life is headed... The film won the Academy Award for Best Actor (Jeff Bridges) and two other awards, and received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress (Maggie Gyllenhaal). It also garnered nominations for Best Actor and Best Original Music at the British Academy Film Awards, as well as winning the Golden Globe for Best Dramatic Film Actor and Best Original Song for a Dramatic Film.
