In an effort to save his friend from an accident, flying firefighter Peter (played by Richard Dreyfuss) sacrifices himself. After death, he arrives at a magical place where the beautiful goddess Hap (played by Audrey Hepburn) tells Peter that he must return to the human world to help his girlfriend Dorinda (played by Holly Hunter) overcome her grief and find happiness again. Thus, Peter transforms into a soul that floats around Dorinda. He cannot be seen or heard by mortals and can only silently watch Dorinda's daily life. Gradually, he seems unable to accept the mission assigned to him by Hap, as he is unwilling for Dorinda to find a new love and fall for her new boyfriend Ted (played by Brad Johnson). Thus, Peter struggles with his own love and jealousy, unable to break free. At this moment, he learns of a much more significant piece of news than his own emotions: Dorinda has had an accident, and her life hangs in the balance. Taking advantage of the time he has left, Peter rushes to Dorinda without hesitation.
