James, who has a congenital intellectual disability (played by Cuba Gooding Jr.), has been the subject of ridicule from childhood. He always carries a radio, which becomes his nickname. In his free time, James enjoys hanging out at the Hanna High School stadium, and over time, a coach named Harold (played by Ed Harris) takes notice of him. After being teased once more, Harold comes to James's aid, and not only that, he publicly announces that James will be a part of his football team from then on. This decision confuses the team members, but they soon discover the shining humanity within James. Under James's optimistic influence, the team experiences repeated victories, and the bond between the players grows stronger. James not only steps out of the shadows in his life but also brings joy and hope to many others.
