In the eyes of their friends, Celeste (played by Rashida Jones) and Jesse (played by Andy Samberg) are a perfect couple. Their love has been ongoing since high school—passionate, enduring, and full of fervor. However, as time passes, the image of each other has faded for both, with Jesse's cynicism and lack of ambition becoming unbearable for Celeste, while Celeste's aloofness and assertiveness often leave Jesse feeling hurt. It seems that the only path left for them is divorce. Though they cannot remain married, the deep feelings between them still exist. They agree to break up without separating, promising to be friends while starting their new romantic lives under the same roof. Yet, reality is not as wonderful as they imagined. Gradually, Celeste realizes she still loves Jesse, and her feelings intensify. What pains her more is that the Jesse she once thought she understood has become increasingly unfamiliar.
