The story takes place in Paris in 1890. Henri (played by José Ferrer) is a painter who often frequents the "Moulin Rouge." While others indulge in the revelry and excess, Henri is solely focused on his painting. By chance, he meets a woman named Marie (played by Colette Marchand), and after helping her escape a dangerous situation, he becomes enchanted by her beauty and cheerfulness. Over time, however, Henri discovers Marie's fickleness and untrustworthiness, and his once passionate heart begins to cool amidst repeated hurts. Eventually, Henri's painting career starts to flourish, and his advertisement for the "Moulin Rouge" gains external attention and recognition. Afterward, he encounters the kind and hardworking owner; although he has feelings for her, the emotionally scarred Henri chooses to bury his feelings until the owner becomes someone else's bride.
