With the arrival of a new era, the once prestigious Makigawa family in Kyoto slowly begins to decline, while the four daughters of the family remain a beautiful sight in the city. The eldest sister, Tsuru (played by Keiko Kishi), steadfastly maintains the family reputation in their ancestral home; the second sister, Yukiko (played by Ruriko Asaoka), has a strong and domineering personality that makes her husband, Teinosuke (played by Koji Ishizaka), feel inadequate; the third sister, Yukiko (played by Sayuri Yoshinaga), is gentle and virtuous but continues to delay her marriage; the youngest sister, Mako (played by Yuko Takenaka), has a flamboyant and open personality, making her a more Westernized girl. Tsuru and her family, troubled by Mako's scandal that has stirred the town, decide to find a suitable husband for Yukiko as soon as possible to uphold family values. However, it's easier said than done, as the usually silent Yukiko repeatedly refuses several marriage proposals, which secretly delights Teinosuke, who admires her...
