Joe (Bruce Willis) was once an excellent agent, having successfully completed many extremely dangerous missions. However, his overly straightforward and stubborn personality ultimately led him to a disaster that cost him his job. Now, the down-and-out Joe is just an obscure and unlucky private detective. One day, a former colleague, Mike (Bruce McGill), calls Joe and entrusts him with a difficult task—to protect a dancer named Cory (Halle Berry). However, in the end, both Mike and Cory fall victim to death, and their deaths reveal that Joe has stumbled into a conspiracy he should not have been involved in. Joe teams up with Cory's boyfriend, Jimmy, to investigate the truth behind the case, unexpectedly uncovering a scandal involving the sports and political worlds.
