Sophie Hall (played by Amanda Seyfried) is a journalist for The New Yorker. Her fiancé, Victor, is busy with his restaurant. They travel to Verona, Italy. However, Victor is absorbed in tasting food and neglects her. This leads to tensions in their relationship. Sophie wanders to the wall of wishes and discovers that many people write letters to Juliet. Curious, she follows a woman collecting the letters and finds out that four ladies play Juliet, responding to emotional inquiries. Sophie is moved and decides to join them. She reads a letter from 50 years ago: Claire Smith (played by Vanessa Redgrave) speaks about a regret-filled romance from the past. Sophie thoughtfully responds to the letter. Unexpectedly, one day, the elderly woman's grandson, Charlie (played by Chris Egan), shows up. She learns that the elder read her letter and decided to rekindle her true love. However, Charlie finds this absurd. During their argument, the three embark on a journey to find love together...
