Hidden between the airport, highway, and the banks of the Danube River in the Simmering district of Vienna is a world made of copper walls and makeshift barracks, the settlement Macondo for around 3,000 refugees from 22 countries. Eleven-year-old Ramasan fled here from Chechnya with his mother and two sisters seeking asylum; his father died in the conflict between Chechnya and Russia—at least that's what he has heard. Ramasan does his best to fill his father's role, taking care of his sisters and helping his mother tie her headscarf.
