The tragic experiences of childhood have created a deep rift between Michael (Ryan Reynolds) and his father Charles (Willem Dafoe). Now a renowned novelist, Michael has just completed a novel titled "Fireflies in the Garden," which recounts all the pain of his childhood. The news of his mother Lisa (Julia Roberts) finally graduating from college brings Michael back to his hometown, a place filled with familiar sights as well as painful memories. Unfortunately, upon stepping through the door, he is met with the devastating news of his mother's tragic death in a car accident. Seeing his grieving father, Michael begins to reconsider the meaning of family ties. His father's furious reaction to Michael's new book sees it as an accusation against him, reigniting the conflict between father and son.
