The film consists of three stories: "The Adultery Record" follows the porcelain shop owner (played by 夏雯) who has an affair with 王大锤, a blacksmith from across the street. The saying goes, "Those who walk by the river will eventually get their shoes wet." Their affair is discovered by the owner, who, along with his brother-in-law, rushes to catch them in the act but is ultimately outsmarted by his wife and 王大锤. Not only does he end up wearing a cuckold's hat, but he also faces legal troubles; "The Marriage of Inconvenience" tells the story of an over twenty-year-old young woman marrying a ten-year-old boy, questioning how a woman in the height of her desires can submit to a child. On their wedding night, she conspires with her cousin to switch partners; "The Secret Affair" features a pawnshop owner (李昆) who is "decisive and quick in his actions," which infuriates his wife, who is in the prime of her youth. Whenever her husband falls asleep, she pulls on the red string on her toes to summon her lover for a clandestine affair. The stories "The Adultery Record" and "The Secret Affair" are adapted from the seventh day of Giovanni Boccaccio's "Decameron."
