After World War II, Hester Collyer (Rachel Weisz), the wife of British lawyer William Collyer (Simon Russell Beale), encounters retired pilot Freddie Page (Tom Hiddleston). Feeling empty and lonely, Hester enters into an affair with the young and handsome Freddie. This relationship is soon discovered by Hester's husband, William. Later, Hester believes that Freddie no longer loves her and attempts to take her own life. She fails, and Freddie, after reading her suicide note, becomes furious. Ultimately, Freddie decides to leave her and continue his piloting career in a distant place. Hester can only watch sadly as Freddie walks away...
