After the death of Nicholas Nickleby's (played by Charlie Hunnam) father, the family loses its economic support. He and his mother and sister go to London to seek help from their uncle Ralph, who is a profit-driven man only interested in exploiting Nicholas. Thus, Nicholas is sent to his uncle's friend, Wackford Squeers (played by Jim Broadbent), but the children at the so-called school endure abuse from the Squeers couple. Out of anger, Nicholas confronts Wackford and leaves with the most pitiable Smike (played by Jamie Bell). On the way, they receive help from kind-hearted people. Upon learning that his sister Kate is at risk of losing her reputation due to their uncle, Nicholas severs ties with Ralph after returning to London. Fortunately, he gains the favor of the Cheeryble brothers and secures a well-paying job. Unfortunately, his long-time companion Smike passes away from illness. Ralph, unwilling to be defied, secretly plots to bring Nicholas down, but Ralph's assistant decides to side with Nicholas and warns him. Nicholas falls in love at first sight with the beautiful Madeline (played by Anne Hathaway), and Ralph attempts to ruin their relationship.
