After the death of Nicholas Nickleby's (played by Charlie Hunnam) father, the family loses its economic support. He and his mother and sister go to London to seek help from their uncle Ralph, who is a profit-driven man only interested in exploiting Nicholas. Thus, Nicholas is sent to his uncle's friend, Wackford Squeers (played by Jim Broadbent), but the children at the so-called school endure abuse from the Squeers couple.
