Sixteen-year-old boy Craig (played by Kyle Gallner) often imagines his own death. After trying various medications with no effect, he voluntarily checks himself into a psychiatric hospital for treatment. There, he becomes friends with Bobby (played by Zach Galifianakis), a quirky individual who has attempted suicide multiple times but hasn't succeeded, and he also meets a special girl named Noelle, along with many other "not normal" people. Together, they gradually rediscover the meaning of life in the hospital, especially inspired by Bob Dylan's lyrics, "He Not Busy Being Born Is Busy Dying," which gives them great strength and courage to face the pressures of life. Ultimately, after being discharged, will Craig be able to bring sunlight back to his previously gloomy life, and in what ways will he find a relaxed and fulfilling existence? This film is adapted from Ned Vizzini's novel of the same name and was filmed at a preparatory school and a hospital in Brooklyn.
