The Elephant Man (played by John Hurt) is a person born with a deformity, his face resembling that of an elephant, hence the name. He has been exploited by a greedy circus owner, taken on tours around the world, and subjected to inhumane treatment. The experiences that the Elephant Man endures are hard for society’s elites to believe; however, the optimistic and strong Elephant Man manages to cope. Until one day, he meets a young British doctor (played by Anthony Hopkins), who, out of compassion and medical ethics, signs an "adoption" agreement with the circus owner and takes the Elephant Man back to the hospital for study. In the hospital, the Elephant Man experiences human warmth again, and a deep friendship develops between the doctor and him; the doctor can't bear to part with this “abandoned child of God.” But the greedy circus owner takes the Elephant Man back again. Does this mean the end of his new life?
