The film company "Nikkatsu" has celebrated its centenary, and one of its most representative brands is the "Pink Film" (in Japanese, Roman Porno; internationally known as Pink Movie), which was immensely popular in the 70s and 80s, serving as a romanticized form of adult film. This year marks the 45th anniversary of the birth of "Pink Film," and "Nikkatsu" has specially planned the "Roman Porno Reboot" project, hiring five renowned directors: Matsumoto Hee, Yukisada Isao, Nakata Hideo, Shiota Akihiko, and Shiraishi Kazuya, each to direct a pink film. The five must follow the previous rules: every ten minutes there should be a sensual scene, the film length must be between 70 to 80 minutes, production costs must be kept very low, and filming must be completed within a week; all other aspects are free to explore. The results showed that the five directors not only could play along but also excelled at it. Saltida's "The Wet Woman" was the first to be unveiled, reinterpreting the "Pink" classic "The Wet Lovers," telling the story of a wild girl who deliberately gets wet on the beach and then sells herself cheaply to passing men. Shiraishi's "The Female Cats" also pays tribute to the classic "The Night of the Female Cats," with the new version set on the streets of Ikebukuro, depicting sexual activities of refugees, single mothers, and childless wives who roam at night after gaming in internet cafes. Yukisada's "The Chaotic Striptease" is an original story, featuring comedian Iita Kuro as a blocked director, who falls into a trap of female allure, leading to his disgrace. Nakata Hideo, known for "The Ring," makes his debut in the adult world, captivating 90s actress Asuka Rin to perform fully nude in a lesbian story titled "White Lily." The ever-outspoken Matsumoto Hee showcases his rebellious side, using sex to counteract sex with "Antiporno," casting former AKB member Tomita Mamoru as the first naked lead. The reason "Pink Film" has remained notable for decades is that it has "immorality" with artistry, low costs but solid scripts, and has been a training ground for young directors honing their craft. Oscar-winning director Takita Yojiro (of "Departures"), Masahiro Sueoka (of "Talk About Love, Dance"), Shusuke Kaneko (of "Death Note"), and the late director Yoshimitsu Morita (of "After My Paradise") all started their careers in pink films. After a 28-year hiatus, the pink series is releasing five films simultaneously, which is highly significant, and they will be screened in Japan starting at the end of November.
