The beautiful girl Reece Holden (played by Zooey Deschanel) harbors a dream of performing. To pursue this, she leaves her hometown in Michigan for metropolitan New York, where she achieves some success through hard work. Her father Dan (played by Ed Harris) was once a well-known writer but hasn't written for nearly twenty years since the death of his beloved wife. The relationship between Reece and her father is quite strained, and they rarely keep in touch after years apart. One evening after a performance, Reece is visited by an unexpected guest, Laurie Lanski (played by Amy Madigan), a woman who makes a living by writing books. Laurie is very interested in the love letters Dan wrote to his late wife and hopes that Reece can provide them. Although Reece has realized her dream of being an actress, she still struggles to make a living. Tempted by a lucrative offer, she decides to return to her hometown after being away for seven years, not realizing that this journey will change her life...
