In the blink of an eye, Fang Li Qun (played by Wang Zheng Fang) has been living in the United States for nearly thirty years. Although his life has become fully Westernized, to friends and colleagues, Fang Li Qun remains an "outsider." Angered by his boss's discrimination against Chinese people, he quits his job and returns to Beijing with his wife, Grace (played by Sharon Iwai), and son, Paul (played by Yu Zhao Han), to stay with his sister Fang Li Min (played by Shen Guang Lan) and brother-in-law Lao Zhao (played by Hu Xiao Guang). The two families live in a Siheyuan. Fang Li Li (played by Li Qin Qin) is Fang Li Min's daughter, who has been dating her boyfriend Liu Yi Da (played by Wang Xiao) for some time. They are both preparing for the same university entrance exam with English studies. Paul is about the same age as them, so the three quickly become friends and form a deep bond. Meanwhile, despite their vastly different personalities and lifestyles, the two families—Fang Li Qun's and Fang Li Min's—still enjoy a harmonious relationship.
