Alcatraz prison, located in the San Francisco Bay, was the most heavily fortified prison of its time, housing some of the most heinous criminals. This prison is known as the hardest prison to escape from in history. Frank (played by Clint Eastwood) is imprisoned at Alcatraz for bank robbery, where he meets Lymtrus (played by Frank Ronzio), who is skilled at taming rats, and a genius painter known as "Doc" (played by Roberts Blossom) with exceptional artistic talent. Due to his good behavior and high IQ, Frank is assigned by the warden to work in the prison library, where he encounters the inmate leader Inglese (played by Paul Benjamin). The warden's tyrannical and brutal rule leads to growing resentment among the prisoners, and after a series of extreme incidents, Frank decides to lead everyone in a jailbreak.
