The story takes place during the tumultuous and war-torn era of King Louis XV in France. Fangfang (played by Vincent Perez) is an exceptionally skilled rural youth who runs away from home to escape an arranged marriage. He naively believes a prophecy from a Bohemian girl he encounters, thinking he will marry the king's daughter. To fulfill this prophecy, he joins the army. Upon entering the army, he discovers that the girl who gave him the prophecy is Adeline (played by Penélope Cruz), the niece of a sergeant, who has secretly fallen for him. By chance, Fangfang saves a girl besieged by bandits, who turns out to be Princess Henriette, the king's daughter. To make the "prophecy come true," Fangfang climbs the castle to see the princess again but is mistaken for a bandit and arrested, facing the death penalty. To save Fangfang, Adeline arrives at the palace, but her beauty immediately attracts the king's attention. Just when Fangfang's execution is about to begin, Adeline is imprisoned... “Tulip Fangfang” is a well-known folk legend in France.
