Shuuhei Amamiya (voiced by Ryunosuke Kamiki), a fifth-grade student aspiring to become a pianist, has just transferred to a rural school. Upon his arrival, he is bullied by his classmates, and a fellow student, Utaichi Nise (voiced by Aya Ueto), steps in to help him, leading to their friendship. Under Utaichi's guidance, Shuuhei discovers a piano abandoned in the forest and realizes that only Utaichi can produce beautiful sounds from it. Music teacher Azuma (voiced by Hiroshi Miyasako) reacts with unexpected excitement upon hearing that Utaichi can play the piano, as it turns out to be the one he discarded. Utaichi knows many pieces by various composers, but when he returns to the forest to play, he finds he cannot perform Chopin's "Waltz of the Little Dog." The next day, he asks Azuma to teach him how to play the piece but is instructed on scales instead. After several days of practice, he finally manages to play the "Little Dog." In return, Utaichi agrees to help fulfill Azuma's wish—to participate in the regional preliminaries for the All Japan Piano Competition. Will he be able to pass the preliminaries and play his own soulful music...? This film is adapted from the manga of the same name by Japanese manga artist Makoto Eishi.
