7-year-old Olive, wearing glasses and having a slight belly, dreams of becoming famous overnight and firmly believes that she can one day be crowned Miss America. Dad, a lecturer promoting success courses, believes "there are only two types of people in the world, successful ones and failures," and travels to sell his "Nine Steps to Success"; Brother, an autistic boy, idolizes Nietzsche and takes a vow of silence for nine months to get into flight school, not speaking to his family; Uncle, who claims to be the best Proust scholar in America, is gay, lost his lover and job, attempted suicide, and lives in chaos; Grandpa (played by Alan Arkin), a foul-mouthed, drug-addicted elderly man kicked out of a nursing home; Mom is the only normal person in this crazy family. Supported by her family, Olive enters the "Little Miss Sunshine" beauty pageant, and the family embarks on a journey to pursue their dreams together. Will Olive achieve her dream? How will the family members get through their own crises?
