The train slowly moves forward with memories, returning to her hometown, which she fled due to war, to take her grandmother, who stayed behind. But this time, she can't find a train to leave. When exile, war, hunger, and death force everyone into a desperate struggle for survival, and all that remains of her hometown is the shattered roof tiles letting light through, what can still carry the nostalgia and longing? The director, with emotionally restrained imagery, transforms the tragic war story in the Caucasus region during the 1990s into a personal and emotional reflection on nationhood. Poetic images are layered one after another, and we seem to wander with the characters through the fog of history and time, stepping into Tarkovsky's landscapes.
