Although she doesn't admit it, Mavis (played by Charlize Theron) is a classic example of a single woman in her late thirties. She lives alone, has no friends, eats junk food, and writes bad novels, and to make matters worse, her novels don’t sell well. One day, she receives an email from her ex-boyfriend Buddy (played by Patrick Wilson), who has become a father, and mistakenly thinks it's a romantic signal. Excited, Mavis decides to reinvent herself and return to the small town of Mercury, where she lived during her student years, to "save" her ex-boyfriend who is now caught in the vortex of marriage. In Mercury, she meets the overweight Matt (played by Patton Oswalt), whom she once ridiculed. Matt tells her to abandon her plans to break up Buddy's family because Buddy is actually very happy; his wife is also a charming housewife. Mavis, of course, doesn’t believe it, but the harsh reality slaps her in the face. Humiliated in front of her old classmates, Mavis suddenly realizes that Buddy’s happy life makes her envious, but her own life is also what others might consider the "best life." Overnight, Mavis transforms from a "young adult" into a true "grown-up."
