In April 1949, after the three major battles of Liaoshen, Huaihai, and Pingjin, the military strength comparison between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party underwent fundamental changes. The People's Liberation Army launched a large-scale strategic offensive against the vast areas still controlled by the Kuomintang authorities, according to the order from Chairman Mao Zedong and General Zhu De to "march towards the nation." The initial target was the heavily fortified Nanjing, Shanghai, and Hangzhou region. On April 20, 1949, our million-strong army launched the Yangtze River crossing campaign in three groups from the north, east, and west. The Kuomintang's painstakingly constructed defense line along the Yangtze River crumbled before the overwhelming might of the People's Liberation Army. Following their victory, the PLA moved southward, capturing Nanjing, cutting off the Zhejiang-Jiangxi line, occupying Hangzhou, and advancing towards Shanghai. To protect the safety of the lives and property of the people of Shanghai and the city’s architecture, the PLA, after careful planning and considerable sacrifices, finally liberated China’s largest city, Shanghai, on May 27. This film displays this grand and magnificent historical narrative while also fully showcasing the significant events, key contradictions, and the evolution of sentiments during this critical historical moment in Chinese society. It highlights the essential figures—the decision-makers, commanders, participants of historical events—and the "living history" reflecting the diverse mental states and emotional worlds of those involved.
