The story takes place in 16th century rural France, where Martin (Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu) is a layabout man who spends his days idly. One day, he suddenly abandons his wife Bertrande (Nathalie Baye) and their two lovely children, disappearing without a trace. Seven years pass in the blink of an eye, during which Martin neither reappears nor is Bertrande notified of his death. Just as mysteriously as his disappearance, one day, Martin returns. He tells Bertrande that he has been helping the King of France in various campaigns over the years. What amazes Bertrande is that Martin seems to have transformed into a different person, appearing refined and hardworking. While the villagers believe that this new Martin is an imposter, Bertrande is convinced that this is her husband who vanished seven years ago.
