Salmon expert Dr. Jones (Ewan McGregor) works for the British fishing department, and a mid-life crisis leaves him feeling bored and exhausted with life. One day, Dr. Jones suddenly receives what seems to be an absurd proposition. A wealthy Yemeni sheikh, through his young secretary Harriet (Emily Blunt), contacts Dr. Jones, hoping to enlist his help in realizing his dream of fishing for salmon in Yemen. Meanwhile, the British government finds significant political meaning in the project, leading the British Prime Minister's press secretary (Kristin Scott Thomas) to eagerly join in. As the work progresses, subtle changes occur between Dr. Jones and Harriet. But facing his lifelong wife and his boyfriend returning from war, what choices will Dr. Jones and Harriet make? What changes will the extraordinary plan spanning two countries undergo with the involvement of the British government? Will the sheikh's dream of fishing for salmon in Yemen ultimately succeed? This is a story about love, faith, and choices. The film is adapted from the 2007 novel of the same name by British author Paul Torday.
