In 1976, Virginia, USA. Norma (Cameron Diaz) is a high school teacher, and her husband Arthur (James Marsden) works at NASA. They live a happy life with decent careers and no financial worries, but their only concern is their son Walter (Sam Oz Stone), who is gravely ill and deteriorating in health. As time passes, their son's condition worsens, and the couple gradually can no longer afford the exorbitant medical bills. One morning, a mysterious black car leaves a box with a red button at their doorstep. Soon after, a man with a terrifying scar visits Norma. He claims that the box can bring happiness to its owner; each time the button is pressed, vast wealth will come in, but in exchange, someone in the world will die. With their son's massive medical expenses on one side and an innocent life on the other, what will Norma and Arthur choose?
