The Berkman family is facing a family crisis. Dad Bernard (Jeff Daniels) is experiencing a career decline; once a bestselling author, he has now become obscure, while his wife Joan (Laura Linney) is gaining prominence in her writing, leaving Bernard feeling a sense of loss. He chooses to confront his wife's success with sharp and sarcastic remarks, and the couple must face the breakdown of their marriage. Their two sons are inevitably troubled by their parents' relationship. The older son Walter (Jesse Eisenberg), 16 years old and in the throes of adolescence, firmly sides with his father, only to discover that the girl he likes has ended up in bed with his dad. The younger son Frank (Owen Kline), 12 years old, sees his parents' divorce as the end of the world and even begins to drink, becoming antagonistic towards his brother in support of their mother. The family's helplessness leaves a deep imprint on the growth of the two children...
