In 1891, the Post-Impressionist master Paul Gauguin had gained some fame in the art circles of Paris but was tired of the hypocrisy and pretentiousness of civilized society. His desire for the primitive world drove him to leave behind his wife and children and travel to Tahiti in the South Pacific; he was ready to sacrifice everything in pursuit of a long-awaited life and creative environment filled with nature, wildness, and purity. Enduring economic poverty and spiritual solitude, Gauguin ventured deep into the jungle, meeting the local Māori people and encountering a native girl named Tehura; a triangular relationship slowly began to emerge. This distant island seemed to be the homeland of his soul, and the vibrant characters and landscapes here became his muses, inspiring him to create the most iconic masterpieces of his artistic career.
