Undercover agent Jack Rourke (played by Ethan Hawke) blames himself for the deaths of two partners during a mission, leading him to be reassigned as the captain of the 13th precinct. Psychologist Alikoss regularly counsels him, but Jack masks his turmoil with a cynical attitude. On New Year's Eve, heavy snowfall leaves only Jack, veteran officer Jasper, and secretary Alice on duty at the 13th precinct. During the transport of recently captured mob leader Bishop (played by Laurence Fishburne) along with three other criminals, the transport vehicle takes refuge at the precinct due to roadblocks caused by the snow, which also keeps Alikoss at the station. Two transport officers join a small New Year's celebration, but suddenly, the situation takes a turn for the worse when one of the transport officers is shot dead. Dozens of armed individuals surround the 13th precinct, cutting off contact with the outside world. Jack finds police credentials on one of the intruders, realizing they are corrupt members of the police force who have long collaborated with Bishop and are now intent on silencing him. Jack must rely on the strength of the four criminals to engage in a series of fierce battles against the fully armed corrupt police officers. This film is a remake of the 1976 film of the same name directed by Carpenter and won the 2005 Best Sound Editing award from the Directors Guild of Canada.
