In an accident, Prince Einon (played by David Thewlis) suffers a fatal injury to his heart. To save the prince's life, a dragon sacrifices half of its heart. After being revived, Einon undergoes a dramatic change, becoming vicious and brutal. The prince's swordsmanship teacher, Bowen (played by Dennis Quaid), believes that the cause of this change is the dragon's half-heart in the prince. To help Einon regain his true nature, Bowen decides to do whatever it takes to find the dragon that possesses the other half of the heart. Ten years pass in the blink of an eye, and countless dragons have perished at Bowen's hands. Ultimately, he encounters his long-sought rival, and a deep friendship develops between man and dragon. Gradually, Bowen discovers that Einon's brutality is not related to the dragon heart; it is his true nature. Upon learning this truth, Bowen, along with Kara (played by Dina Meyer), whom he meets during his journey, joins the uprising to overthrow Einon's tyranny.
