During World War II, Germany invented a stealth submarine that was successful in naval battles. On one mission, this submarine was ordered to execute an attack on a British fleet. However, while returning from the successful mission, they encountered an unprecedented crisis. Potential threats loomed over the lives of the crew at all times, and this seemingly powerful and cold behemoth was completely defenseless, leaving everything to fate... The film is adapted from the bestseller autobiography by war correspondent Buchheim, and it received six nominations at the 54th Academy Awards in 1982, winning the Oscar. Wolfgang Petersen became the first director nominated for Best Director for a German-language film.
