The story takes place during the Mexican Revolution in the early twentieth century. In a long-distance coach, the noble gentlemen and ladies are boasting about a silent farmer, but suddenly the farmer transforms, revealing his true identity as Juan (played by Rod Steiger), a family-style gang leader. After a robbery, Juan encounters John (played by James Coburn), an Irish revolutionary army explosives expert, whose demolition skills make robbing the Mesa Verde Bank a piece of cake. Thus, Juan desperately follows him but inadvertently gets involved in the Mesa Verde uprising in support of the Villa revolutionaries. Juan partners with John to rob the bank as he wished, but all he gains is the liberation of 150 political prisoners.
Colonel Gante of the government army suppresses the revolution, causing Juan and the revolutionary group to pay a heavy price. In adversity, John and Juan develop a true revolutionary bond, and on their way to the United States, they turn back to ambush Colonel Gante. When John is shot, the old warrior sees warm scenes from the past in Ireland… This film won the Best Director Award at the 1972 Italian David Awards.
