In the 19th century American West, a stagecoach is traveling through the desert. There are nine strangers on board. Among them are the town's outcast prostitute Dallas (played by Claire Trevor), an alcoholic doctor Doc Boone (played by Thomas Mitchell), a pregnant woman Lucy Mallory searching for her husband, whiskey trader Samuel Peacock, and the Ringo Kid (played by John Wayne), who escaped from prison to avenge his father. Along the way, they face numerous dangers, needing to evade Indian attacks, while Dallas endures contempt and neglect from the others, except for Ringo, who has feelings for her. Ringo must also deal with his relationship with the law. Pregnant Lucy goes into labor midway; can the drunken doctor turn the tide? After a perilous journey, will the two marginalized individuals, Ringo and Dallas, be able to come together? The film received five Oscar nominations in 1940, winning awards for Best Supporting Actor and Best Music.
