Through the lives of two women from the 1960s to the 1970s, Varda constructs a feminist history. The story describes the 15-year relationship between two very different women. They both resonate with Simone de Beauvoir's famous quote: "One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman." Pauline is a middle-class girl from the city. In stark contrast to her family's traditional conservatism, she leaves home at 17 to pursue her dream of becoming a singer. Suzanne, slightly older, is a rural girl whose lover has committed suicide. She is raising two illegitimate children on her own, with a third on the way. Despite having little in common, the two women get along well. Eventually, they are forced to part ways. Suzanne moves to southern France and establishes a family planning center. Pauline organizes a women's singing group to raise awareness through their songs. Many years later, Pauline and Suzanne meet again at a rally for abortion rights. They return to their past.
