Captain Frank (Dennis Quaid) has dealt with planes for many years, and this time he will be in charge of a "Phoenix" cargo plane, transporting a group of oil workers and supplies to Beijing. However, to his surprise, the plane encounters a storm along the way, and Frank is forced to make an emergency landing on the desolate Gobi Desert in Inner Mongolia.
