It is the late Edo period when Matsumura Kitsu (played by Shōyō Uchino), the chief retainer of the Akashi domain, commits suicide in front of the residence of Tokugawa's elder statesman, Doi Oikata (played by Kazuhiro Yamaji), causing an uproar throughout the realm. All of this is instigated by the Akashi lord, Saizō (played by Goro Inagaki). Saizō is the half-brother of the current shogun, known for his bloodthirsty and unpredictable nature, leading to dissatisfaction among many in the court. Despite this, Saizō has been designated as the next elder statesman. To prevent the common people from suffering under his tyranny, Doi instructs Shinzaemon Shimada (played by Koji Yakusho) to assassinate Saizō on his way back to the domain. Shinzaemon gathers 13 assassins, including Kuronaga Sapeita (played by Hiroki Matsukata), Mitsuhashi Gunjiro (played by Kazuki Sawamura), and Hirayama Kyujiro (played by Takeshi Iwata), laying traps along Saizō's route... This film is a remake of the classic 1963 film of the same name directed by Eiichi Kudo, with the script for the new version written by Daisuke Tenge, the son of the renowned director Masahiro Imamura. The film won 4th place in the 2010 Japan Film Trend's Top 10 Films.
