In the 1930s, the martial arts capital of China, Foshan. One day, the skilled Northern martial artist Jin Shanzhao (played by Fan Shaohuang) comes to Foshan to challenge the martial arts schools. After defeating the heads of several prominent schools, he approaches the humble and low-profile Ip Man (played by Donnie Yen), who has mastered many martial arts but does not run a school. At the request of the local police officer Li Zhao (played by Lin Jiadong), his friend, the martial arts enthusiast Lin (played by Xing Yu), and the encouragement of his wife Zhang Yongcheng (played by Xiong Dailin), Ip Man uses Wing Chun to subdue Jin Shanzhao with soft against hard, establishing his master status in Foshan. Li Zhao privately regards him as a master. Previously, Ip Man's close friend Zhou Qingquan (played by Ren Dahua) wanted to partner with him to open a textile factory, but fearing separation from his beloved wife and son, Ip Man only supported Zhou financially. A few years later, the invading Japanese army occupies Foshan, and like the surviving locals, Ip Man is forced to move with his wife and child to a dilapidated house. In order to survive, Ip Man mixes with the crowd to fight for opportunities to work as laborers in the coal mines, while Li Zhao becomes a Japanese army translator. The Japanese general Sanpu (played by Chi Nei Hiroyuki) is a martial arts enthusiast who, as a reward, offers a bag of white rice for Li Zhao to find Chinese martial artists to spar with the Japanese soldiers, leading to the tragic deaths of several former school heads and martial arts enthusiasts. This infuriates Ip Man, prompting him to enter the fighting arena.
