The soldier Ford Brody (played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson) lives a happy and fulfilling life, but he harbors a lingering shadow within. Fifteen years ago, he lived in Japan with his father, Joe (played by Bryan Cranston), and mother, Sandra (played by Juliette Binoche). His parents worked at a large nuclear power plant. On the day of Ford's father's birthday, a sudden disaster destroyed the nuclear plant, and his mother lost her life in the catastrophe. The vague government covered up the truth, sealing off the area in the name of preventing nuclear radiation. However, Joe sensed the abnormality from various anomalies and has been trying to uncover the mystery of that day's disaster for fifteen years, ultimately discovering that everything was caused by a mountain-sized monster.
