In a small village at the foot of Mount Fuji, a lively festival is underway, but a sudden wildfire plunges the people into panic, and astronomer Yoshii Shiraishi (played by Akihiko Hirata) goes missing amid the chaos. Soon, bizarre events such as landslides and sinkholes occur, and a giant, terrifying robot appears, wreaking havoc on nearby towns. Shiraishi's friend Nagamatsu Kenji (played by Kenji Sawahara) and Dr. Ando Kenjiro (played by Takashi Shimura) join the military to investigate the situation, inadvertently encountering an alien spherical base and receiving an invitation from the aliens. The aliens claim that their planet was destroyed in a nuclear war long ago, and the survivors are wandering through the universe seeking a suitable habitat. They hope that Earthlings will designate a 3-kilometer radius of land for the aliens to inhabit and allow them to intermarry with Earth women. Humanity refuses, leading to the formation of the Earth Defense Force to confront the extraterrestrial visitors... This film is Toho's first special effects work in widescreen.
