In the dense and tranquil forest of barn owls, the owl Nooktus lives with his wife and children on the branches of a towering tree. His son Soren (voiced by Jim Sturgess) is infatuated with the legend of the "Guardians." It is said that long ago, the evil "Pure-Bred" (tyto) king, who wore a steel beak, oppressed the owl populace, but at a crucial moment, the Guardians stepped up to defeat the king and his minions. However, the defeated have never given up on the thought of revenge. Soren's yearning for ancient legends annoys his older brother Kludd (voiced by Ryan Kwanten) so much that he pushes Soren off the tree.
