The blind masseur ICHI has an ordinary appearance but is a highly skilled swordsman. Although he has various bad habits, he fundamentally possesses a kind-hearted, upright character and a deep hatred for evil. One day, while traveling across the country, he arrives at Sawara, Chūgoku, and stays with a gang member, Suke Goro (played by Ryūji Yanagihara), with whom he has had a brief acquaintance. At this time, Suke Goro is in conflict with a gang led by Shigezō Sasagawa (played by Ryūzō Shimada), and tensions are high. Sasagawa has taken in a down-and-out samurai named Hirata Masakazu (played by Shigeru Amachi), who befriends ICHI despite being from opposing factions. However, they are forced to confront a brutal situation of swords drawn against each other... This film is adapted from the short story of the same name in Hiroshi Komatsu's essay collection "Futokoro Techo," and is the first installment of the "Zatōichi series."
